New hope, new fear for Mindanao

Four days after President Benigno Aquino met in Tokyo with leaders of the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the main Muslim separatist group in the Philippines, a series of firefights between the rebel group and one of its breakaway factions broke out in the southern Philippines, killing at least 14 people and displacing thousands from their homes.

Filipino rebels agree to stop using child soldiers

Once the guerrilla groups have complied with their respective action plans, they can be removed from the U.N. list of movements that violate children’s rights. The Philippines is among 22 countries in the world that the United Nations says have “situations of concern” because of the use of child combatants.
